The inspector normally examines the following areas.

  • Upright frames and columns: Vertical frames are checked for impact damage, dents, bending, twisting, corrosion, distortion and signs of instability. The inspector also considers whether the frames remain plumb and correctly positioned.
  • Beams and beam connections: Horizontal beams are assessed for bending, deflection, damage, displacement and overloading. Beam connectors, locking pins and other retaining features are checked to confirm that the beams are properly seated and secured.
  • Bracing members: Horizontal and diagonal bracing is inspected for damage, looseness, distortion, missing parts and inadequate connections. Bracing helps maintain the geometry and stability of the structure, so even relatively minor damage may require attention.
  • Baseplates, anchors and floor fixings: The inspection checks whether baseplates are correctly positioned and undamaged, and whether anchors are present, secure and suitable for the installation. Cracked concrete, damaged flooring or movement around the fixings may also be recorded.
  • Protection systems: Column guards, frame protectors, end-of-aisle barriers and other protective measures are examined for damage, movement or poor positioning. Protection must be suitable for the risks created by vehicles and handling equipment in the operating area.
  • Load notices and configuration: Load notices are checked for visibility, accuracy and suitability for the installed arrangement. The inspector compares the stated capacities and beam levels with the actual configuration, including any changes to levels, components or stored loads.
  • Storage and loading practices: The inspection considers whether goods are stored within the stated capacity and positioned correctly on the beams, supports or pallets. Uneven loading, unstable goods, damaged pallets, excessive overhang and unsuitable load units can all create safety risks.
  • Clearances and access routes: Aisle widths, vertical clearances, pallet positioning and access points are reviewed to identify obstructions or conditions that could lead to contact with the structure. The inspector also looks for goods projecting into travel routes or reducing safe access.
  • Damage from workplace activity: Fresh impact marks, scraped paint, bent components, displaced beams and damage caused by vehicles are recorded. The location and severity of damage help determine whether the affected area needs immediate action, closer monitoring or planned repair.
  • Corrosion, wear and deterioration: Components are checked for rust, weakened sections, worn connection points and other deterioration that could reduce their capacity or serviceability. The environment, including moisture and chemical exposure, may be considered where it could affect the structure.
  • Installation quality and alterations: The inspector reviews whether the system appears to have been installed correctly and whether later alterations have affected its original design. Unauthorised changes, missing components, incompatible parts or altered beam positions may require technical review.
  • Floor and surrounding conditions: The floor around the installation is checked for damage, settlement, uneven surfaces and other conditions that could affect stability. Nearby doors, lighting, services, fire equipment, walkways and other operational features are also considered where they interact with safe use.
  • Housekeeping and operational hazards: The inspection identifies blocked aisles, loose materials, spillages, waste, poorly positioned equipment and other hazards that could contribute to impact or obstruct emergency access. These issues may not be defects in the structure itself, but they can affect the safe operation of the installation.

Not every issue has the same significance. A competent inspector records the location and nature of each defect, considers its likely risk and recommends appropriate action. This may include removing a damaged component from service, unloading an affected section, installing temporary protection, arranging a repair or monitoring a lower-risk issue.

The inspection also considers whether previous defects have been repaired effectively and whether any temporary measures remain in place. Where the installed arrangement, loads or operating conditions have changed, further technical assessment may be needed rather than relying solely on a visual inspection.

After the visit, the findings should be documented clearly so that responsible personnel can identify each affected area and take proportionate action. The report should distinguish urgent hazards from items requiring planned attention and should support the warehouse’s ongoing inspection and maintenance records.

Regular inspections are most useful when staff report damage promptly, defective areas are controlled without delay and repairs are completed by suitably competent personnel. This approach helps maintain structural integrity, reduce avoidable disruption and keep the storage system safe for everyday warehouse operations.
