The inspection also considers housekeeping, operating conditions and previous defects, with findings recorded clearly so corrective action can be prioritised and the storage system kept safe and compliant.

A warehouse racking inspection is a systematic assessment of the storage system, its components, the way it is being used and the surrounding working conditions. Decking, supports and accessories

Where fitted, decking, support bars, pallet supports, mesh panels and other accessories are checked for damage, displacement and inadequate seating. Load notices and identification

Load notices should be visible, legible and relevant to the actual configuration. Checks include whether the stated information corresponds with the beam levels, bay arrangement and stored loads. Labels and bay identification are also useful when locating defects and managing follow-up work.

Loading practices and use

The inspection assesses how the system is being used, including whether pallets are positioned correctly, loads are stable and weight is distributed appropriately. It also considers overhanging goods, excessive loads, incompatible pallet sizes, uneven loading and storage outside the intended locations. Changes in stock, vehicles, handling equipment or operating practices can introduce risks even where the structure itself appears undamaged.

Housekeeping and working conditions

Aisles, access routes and emergency areas should be kept clear so handling equipment can operate without unnecessary contact with the structure. The inspector looks for obstructions, poorly stacked goods, debris, leaks, poor lighting and other conditions that may increase the likelihood of impact or make defects difficult to see. The condition and use of nearby equipment and work areas may also be noted where they affect safe operation.

Unauthorised alterations and temporary arrangements

Components that have been cut, drilled, welded, removed or substituted without suitable approval can change the system’s design performance. Temporary supports, improvised repairs and changes to beam positions are therefore recorded for review. An installation should not be treated as safe simply because it has been in use for a long time; its current configuration must remain suitable for its loads and operating conditions.

Defect classification and reporting

Each defect should be described clearly, linked to a specific location and assessed according to its potential effect on safety. Reports generally distinguish between issues requiring immediate action, defects needing prompt attention and lower-priority observations that should be monitored or addressed through planned maintenance. Photographs, bay references and practical recommendations help the responsible person arrange the correct response.

After the inspection, damaged areas should be controlled in line with the report’s recommendations. This may involve removing loads, restricting access, isolating a bay, arranging an approved repair or obtaining further technical advice. Repairs should be completed by suitably competent personnel, followed by a check that the work has restored the intended condition. In practice, the value of an inspection comes from considering the complete installation rather than looking only for visibly bent metal.
