Staff carrying out visual checks should understand what defects to look for and how to report them, but they should not be expected to make technical decisions beyond their training.

After an impact, inspection should take place before the affected warehouse racking is returned to normal use. The area may need to be isolated, unloaded or protected from further contact while the damage is assessed. Typical triggers include forklift contact, a dropped load, a visibly bent upright or beam, unusual movement, changes to the layout, installation of new components or a change in the type or weight of stored goods.

Inspection findings should be recorded in a way that allows the condition of each affected section to be identified. Records should normally include the inspection date, areas examined, defects found, photographs where useful, risk classification, immediate controls, recommended repairs, the person responsible for action and the date of completion. Any defect that could affect load capacity or stability should be assessed promptly by a competent person. Damaged components must not simply be straightened, welded or altered without an appropriate technical decision. Repairs, replacements and modifications should be carried out using suitable components and in accordance with the system design and manufacturer’s requirements.
