Inspections after damage or change

- Visible damage, movement, distortion or unexplained changes in the structure
- Alterations to the layout, beam levels, components or protective equipment
- Installation, dismantling, relocation or reconfiguration
- A change in load type, load weight, pallet dimensions or operating method
- An incident involving a falling load, instability or suspected overloading
- Extended periods of disuse, environmental damage or building movement
- Repeated defects or concerns raised by warehouse staff
Where a collision has caused possible structural damage, the affected section should be taken out of use until a competent person has assessed it. Painting over damage, straightening components without technical approval or continuing to use a visibly compromised bay can conceal the problem and increase the risk of failure.
Keeping the inspection programme effective
A frequency is only effective when inspections are consistent, suitably detailed and followed by corrective action. The site should maintain an up-to-date layout plan, safe working load notices, inspection reports, defect records, repair evidence and details of any changes made to the installation. Records should show the date, areas examined, findings, responsible person, required action and close-out date.
Inspection findings should be reviewed as part of the warehouse risk assessment. Recurring damage in the same aisle may indicate a need for improved vehicle controls, better protection, revised traffic routes, operator training or changes to the storage arrangement. In this way, inspections help prevent defects from recurring rather than simply recording them after they occur.
