- Check floor anchors and fixings for looseness, damage, corrosion or missing parts. Fixings should be suitable for the floor and installed as specified for the system.
- Examine the concrete floor around each frame for cracks, settlement, surface damage or deterioration that could affect stability.

- Confirm that pallets are suitable for the beam arrangement and in good condition, with no broken boards, missing supports or other defects that could cause a load to fall.
- Check that loads are placed centrally and securely, with suitable clearances from beams, uprights, ceilings, lights, sprinklers and other services.
Operational condition and surrounding areas
A safety check should also consider how the warehouse storage system is being used. Observe whether lift trucks or other handling equipment are striking frames, whether operators can maintain safe clearances and whether aisles are being used for temporary storage. Check for damaged floor markings, obstructed escape routes, poor lighting, leaking materials and debris that could affect access or visibility. Repeated impact in one location may indicate a traffic-management or operator-training issue rather than an isolated defect.
What to do when a defect is found
Any defect should be recorded clearly, including its location, type, severity and any immediate control applied. Serious damage, instability, missing safety-critical components or evidence of overloading should lead to the affected area being isolated and taken out of use until it has been assessed by a suitably competent person.
