The inspector also checks whether the installation remains suitable for its intended use and identifies repairs or follow-up action needed to maintain compliance and safe operation.

The inspector looks for damage, movement, missing or unsuitable components, overloading, instability and other conditions that could affect safe use. The assessment also considers whether the installation remains suitable for the loads, equipment and operating practices in the warehouse.
The inspection normally covers the following areas:
- Upright frames and columns: Vertical uprights are checked for dents, bends, twists, splits, corrosion and other damage. Particular attention is given to damage at low level, where contact with handling equipment is more likely, as well as any distortion that could affect the frame’s load-bearing capacity.
- Frame bracing: Horizontal and diagonal braces are examined for bending, impact damage, loose or missing components and signs that the frame has moved out of alignment. Bracing helps maintain the structural stability of the installation, so damaged or incomplete sections require prompt attention.
- Beams and beam connections: The inspector checks beams for bending, impact marks, cracking, corrosion, displacement and signs of overloading. Beam connectors, locking pins and safety clips are checked to confirm that beams are properly seated and secured to the uprights.
- Baseplates, anchors and floor condition: Baseplates should sit correctly and remain securely fixed to the floor. The inspection identifies missing, loose or damaged anchors, distorted baseplates and any floor deterioration that could affect stability. The surrounding floor is also considered where settlement, damage or unevenness may influence the installation.
- Protective equipment: Column guards, end-of-aisle protection, barrier systems and other protective measures are checked for damage, movement and suitability. Protection should be positioned to reduce the likelihood and consequence of impact from handling equipment without obstructing access or creating additional hazards.
- Load notices and identification: Load notices should be present, clear, legible and appropriate for the installation. The inspector compares the stated capacities with the arrangement and use of the pallet racking, including beam levels, bay configuration and any changes made since the original installation.
- Decking, supports and pallet positions: Timber, steel or other decking is checked for damage, displacement and inadequate support. The inspector also looks at pallet supports, pallet stops and related components where fitted. Pallets should be positioned correctly, remain in suitable condition and be supported in a way that does not create instability or falling-object risks.
- Structural alterations and missing parts: Unauthorised changes, removed braces, substituted components, improvised repairs and incompatible parts can alter the designed capacity of a system. These are recorded for review, particularly where they affect the original configuration or the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Clearances and operating areas: A pallet racking inspection considers aisle widths, access points, working clearances and the space around bays. The inspector checks for obstructions, poorly positioned stock, damaged flooring and other conditions that could increase the risk of collision or prevent safe handling operations.
- Storage loads and use: The type, weight, size and position of stored goods are considered against the available capacity. Signs of overloading may include visibly deflected beams, overloaded levels, unevenly distributed goods, pallets extending beyond safe limits or loads that are unsuitable for the bay arrangement.
- Housekeeping and falling-object risks: The assessment identifies loose materials, unstable loads, debris and stock that could fall into access areas. It also considers whether goods are stored consistently with the intended method of use and whether housekeeping standards support safe warehouse operations.
- Evidence of previous damage or repairs: Existing damage, temporary measures and completed repairs are reviewed to establish whether they remain effective. Where a component has been straightened, welded or otherwise altered without suitable approval, further technical assessment may be necessary.
The inspector records defects according to their seriousness and recommends the appropriate action. This may include immediate isolation of a damaged bay, removal or rearrangement of stock, repair or replacement of components, closer monitoring or no further action where a condition is confirmed to be safe. Any areas requiring attention should be clearly identified so that responsible personnel can act without delay.
An inspection is not limited to a visual search for obvious impact marks. It also considers the installation’s configuration, capacity information, condition, environment and method of use. Where the inspector finds a significant structural concern, unusual damage or a change from the original design, additional technical advice may be required before the affected area is returned to service.
Regular inspections, supported by routine user checks and prompt reporting of damage, help identify problems before they develop into serious safety issues. Keeping inspection reports, repair records, load information and details of any alterations together also provides useful evidence that the pallet racking is being managed responsibly and remains suitable for its intended purpose.
