How often should a pallet racking inspection be conducted?

- Frequent forklift or other vehicle movements near the storage system
- High stock turnover and regular loading or unloading

- Heavy, awkward or unstable loads
- Changes to the layout, load configuration or working practices
- Areas with restricted visibility, poor lighting or difficult access
- Racking installed in an environment where corrosion, temperature or other conditions may affect its performance
Trained staff should carry out routine visual checks for obvious damage, displaced components, missing safety clips, leaning frames, bent beams, overloaded locations and changes to the condition of the floor or surrounding area. Any concern should be reported immediately, recorded and assessed. Damaged areas may need to be unloaded and taken out of service until a competent person has determined the appropriate action.
A formal inspection is more detailed than a routine visual check. The inspector should assess the condition and stability of the pallet racking, including frames, uprights, beams, connections, bracing, protection, decking, safety devices and load notices. The inspection should also consider whether the system is being used within its design limitations and whether previous defects have been repaired effectively.
Additional inspections should be arranged after an impact, significant damage, alteration, relocation, change of load or change in the way the storage system is used. An inspection may also be necessary after building work, changes to vehicle routes or any event that could affect the stability or protection of the installation.
Inspection findings should be documented clearly, with the date, areas examined, defects identified, risk classification, recommended actions and completion status. Keeping these records helps demonstrate that the warehouse has a planned safety process and allows recurring problems to be identified. It does not, however, replace the need to correct defects promptly.
In practice, the safest approach is to combine competent-person inspections at least annually with documented routine checks and immediate reporting of damage. The exact schedule should be set out in the warehouse risk assessment and reviewed whenever equipment, loads, traffic routes or working conditions change.
