Where possible, the formal inspection should be carried out by someone sufficiently independent from the day-to-day use of the warehouse equipment. This supports a more objective assessment. The warehouse should retain current load notices and relevant manufacturer or installer information.   1. a documented risk assessment for the warehouse and storage equipment;
  2. clear responsibilities for daily or regular visual checks;
  3. a formal inspection by a competent person at an appropriate interval;
  4. a process for reporting damage immediately;
  5. risk-based isolation, unloading, repair and reinspection;
  6. controlled management of layout and component changes; and
  7. training for employees who load, unload, inspect or work near the installation.

The appropriate inspection frequency may need to increase where there is frequent vehicle movement, high impact risk, demanding loading activity, corrosive conditions, poor housekeeping, repeated damage or significant changes to the storage arrangement. Conversely, the interval should never be extended simply because previous inspections found few defects; the decision should be supported by a current risk assessment and operating history.

In practical terms, the standards are intended to keep warehouse racking stable, correctly loaded and fit for continued use. A competent inspection should therefore result in a clear report, prioritised actions and evidence that each finding has been controlled. If the inspection identifies uncertainty about capacity, damage severity or the suitability of a repair, the affected section should remain out of use until it has been assessed by a suitably qualified person.
