The area around the pallet racking is checked for obstructions, poor housekeeping, damaged flooring, water ingress, inadequate clearance and conditions that could contribute to impact or instability. Aisles should provide sufficient space for the equipment and handling methods in use, while escape routes, fire equipment and access points must remain clear.

The inspection can also identify environmental factors such as corrosion, temperature, moisture or accidental contact with nearby plant. These factors may not be visible from the steelwork alone but can influence the durability and safe operation of the installation.

Safety notices and operating information

Load notices and other relevant safety information should be displayed where operators can see them and should accurately reflect the installed arrangement. The inspector checks for missing, damaged, obscured or outdated notices, along with signs that the system is being used differently from the information provided.

Where the layout, loading specification or components have changed, the documentation should be reviewed before the system continues in its revised form. Clear information helps warehouse personnel recognise loading limits and report damage or unsafe conditions.

A competent inspector looks for evidence of alterations, extensions, relocated beams, replaced components and repairs.
