- Cracked or broken welds: Cracks around beam connectors, support members, braces or other welded parts can indicate impact, fatigue, manufacturing defects or excessive loading. Weld damage should not be covered up or repaired without a suitable technical assessment.
- Impact marks and damaged protection: Scrapes, deep dents, paint loss, gouges and fresh metal marks can show that a vehicle, pallet or handling equipment has struck the system. Damaged upright guards, end-of-aisle protection and barrier systems should also be recorded, as they may no longer provide the intended level of protection.
- Missing, loose or displaced components: Bracing, ties, spacers, anchors, clips, safety pins, pallet supports and other components may become loose or disappear during warehouse operations. A missing part can affect the alignment, load distribution or stability of the installation.
- Corrosion or deterioration: Rust, flaking coatings, pitting and other corrosion can reduce the thickness and strength of steel components. Corrosion may be caused by moisture, chemicals, poor environmental conditions or damage to the protective coating. The cause and extent should be established before deciding whether cleaning, treatment, repair or replacement is appropriate.
- Misalignment or leaning: Frames, beams and aisles should remain correctly aligned. A visibly leaning frame, uneven beam line, displaced bay or change in aisle width can indicate impact, failed fixings, movement in the floor or an installation problem. Alignment should be checked rather than judged solely by eye.
- Damaged or loose floor fixings: Anchors and baseplates transfer forces from the structure into the floor. Loose, missing or damaged anchors, cracked concrete around a baseplate and distorted baseplates can affect stability. The floor itself should also be checked for damage, settlement or conditions that may prevent fixings from performing correctly.
- Signs of overloading: Bent members, unusually deflected beams, damaged pallets, crushed goods or loads extending beyond the intended footprint may indicate that the storage system is being used outside its design parameters. Load notices should be present, legible and consistent with the actual configuration and stored loads.
- Unstable or poorly positioned pallets: Pallets that are broken, overhanging, leaning, incorrectly supported or placed outside the designated storage position can impose uneven forces on the structure. Gaps, insufficient support and loads that are not centred can increase the risk of pallet or product failure.
- Damaged decking, pallet supports or safety devices: Mesh decking, timber components, pallet support bars, back stops and anti-displacement devices should be secure and suitable for the loads being stored. Bent, cracked, loose or missing parts may allow pallets to fall or become incorrectly supported.
Inspectors also look for operational evidence that damage may be recurring. Repeated impact marks in the same location, worn protection, poorly controlled vehicle movements, unsuitable pallets or changes to the stored load can point to an underlying issue rather than an isolated defect. Identifying the cause is important because replacing a damaged component alone may not prevent further damage.
