The gate should not be treated as a substitute for a complete guarding arrangement.
  • Gate travel and operating space: The sliding movement must be unobstructed throughout its travel. There should be enough room for the gate to open and close without striking columns, stored goods, vehicles, handrails or people using adjacent routes. Where the gate slides along the platform edge, the travel path should remain protected and free from trip hazards.
  • Interlocks and operating controls: Depending on the design and risk assessment, the gate may require an interlock, controlled sequence or another protective measure to prevent the opening being left exposed during loading. Controls should be positioned where the operator has a clear view of the opening and can use them without entering an unsafe position.
  • Floor and level conditions: The platform and surrounding floor must be sufficiently level and stable for the gate to move correctly. Uneven surfaces, damaged finishes or settlement can cause binding, misalignment and unreliable closing. Any defects should be corrected before installation or addressed within the installation design.
  • Protection from impact: If handling equipment operates close to the gate, the design should consider impact protection for posts, tracks, brackets and other vulnerable components. Protective barriers must not reduce the required opening or introduce new footholds, sharp edges or collision points.

The selected gate design should also match the way the opening is used. A manually operated sliding gate may be appropriate where transfers are occasional and controlled, while a powered or assisted arrangement may be considered where the gate is used frequently or the panel is heavy. In either case, the gate should be straightforward to operate and should not encourage staff to bypass safety features or leave it partly open.

Installation work should be coordinated with the wider site programme. The area may need to be isolated while fixings are installed, components are lifted into position and protective systems are temporarily removed or adjusted. Work should be planned so that no unprotected edge is left accessible to employees or contractors. Existing services, lighting, fire protection equipment and emergency routes should also be considered before drilling or fitting any components.

After fitting, the installer should check the gate for alignment, smooth travel, secure fixings, correct closing, adequate guarding and safe interaction with adjacent equipment. Any interlock or protective device should be function-tested, and the gate should be operated with representative loads where appropriate.
