There is no single statutory qualification required to become a warehouse racking inspector in the UK, but inspectors must be demonstrably competent through suitable training, practical experience and a sound understanding of relevant safety guidance. The inspector should understand that an inspection is not simply a visual search for obvious damage. They must consider whether the system is being used as intended, whether loads are suitable, whether components are compatible and whether previous repairs or alterations may have affected its integrity.

Independence and professional judgement

The person carrying out the inspection should be sufficiently independent to make an impartial assessment. They should not ignore defects because of production pressures, familiarity with the site or a desire to avoid disruption. At the same time, recommendations should be proportionate to the actual risk and based on observable evidence, relevant guidance and the available technical information.

Where an inspector finds damage that may affect the structural integrity of warehouse racking, they should not guess at a repair or approve continued use without adequate evidence. The matter should be escalated to the responsible person, manufacturer, supplier or suitably qualified warehouse racking engineer as appropriate.

Ongoing competence and refresher learning

Competence should be maintained after the initial course. Inspectors benefit from refresher training, updates to legislation and industry guidance, reviews of inspection findings and continued exposure to different warehouse racking layouts and operating environments. Their employer should keep evidence of training, experience and any relevant continuing professional development.

It is also sensible to check whether the inspector has experience with the specific equipment and working conditions at the site. A warehouse with high levels of forklift traffic, unusual loads, frequent layout changes or a history of impact damage may require more specialised knowledge than a simple storage environment.

Before appointing an inspector, ask for details of their relevant training, practical experience, inspection method and reporting process. You can also check whether they understand the manufacturer’s information, applicable guidance and the responsibilities of the person in control of the warehouse racking.

  • Request evidence of relevant inspection training or certification.
  • Confirm that the inspector has practical experience with comparable warehouse racking systems.
  • Ask to see an example of a suitably detailed inspection report, with confidential information removed.
  • Check that the inspection scope includes the areas and equipment you need assessed.
  • Confirm how urgent defects will be communicated and followed up.
  • Establish whether repairs, design advice or further structural assessment will be referred to an appropriately qualified specialist.
