Damage to frames and uprights

Uprights, bracing members and frame components can be struck by lift trucks, handling equipment or pallets. Unauthorised alterations and incorrect installation

Inspectors compare the installed arrangement with available design information, drawings, load data and manufacturer guidance where these are available. Alterations should be reviewed by a suitably competent person before use, particularly where they affect load capacity, clearances, access routes or the relationship between adjoining bays.

Insufficient protection from vehicle impact

Where pallet racking is positioned near forklift routes, loading areas or other vehicle movements, the lower sections are particularly exposed to impact. Missing, incorrectly positioned or damaged protection can leave uprights vulnerable to repeated contact.

Impact protection does not remove the need to inspect the structural components themselves. A barrier may be damaged while the upright behind it has also been affected. Corrosion, deterioration and poor environmental conditions

Floor, anchorage and alignment concerns

Warehouse racking depends on a suitable floor and secure anchorage. Inspectors may identify damaged or missing anchors, cracked concrete, uneven floors, settlement, out-of-plumb frames or bays that have moved from their intended alignment.

These conditions can affect how loads are transferred through the structure and may cause doors, access routes or adjacent equipment to become obstructed. They should be assessed alongside the frame and beam condition, as correcting only the visible steelwork may not resolve the underlying problem.

Poor housekeeping and obstructed access

Follow-up checks should confirm that repairs have been completed correctly and that any temporary restrictions can safely be removed.

Impact on warehouse safety and efficiency

From a safety perspective, unresolved defects can lead to falling loads, pallet collapse, vehicle collisions or progressive structural damage. From an operational perspective, they can reduce available storage capacity, restrict aisles, delay picking and replenishment, increase product damage and require unplanned shutdowns.
